About Us

The Alliance for the Arts serves the entire cultural community through research and advocacy and serves the public through cultural guides and calendars. We publish information on the arts and cultural events in New York City as well as studies highlighting the importance of the arts to the economy and to education.

The Alliance is:

A resource. We serve constituencies in New York City, New York State and across the US, including

Children, parents and teachers
The general public and visitors to New York
New York's cultural community
Government and civic leaders and researchers
Artists, curators and historians.

An advocate. We help government and civic leaders understand the importance of cultural organizations to our city. We make the case for more support for culture from all levels of government.

An information resource. The Alliance published the first guide to New York museums in 1978. We continue this work through NYC ARTS and NYCkidsARTS, in print and online and our new online cultural guide for the state, NYStateARTS.org. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and tourists use our guides to cultural programs every year. New York City public school teachers use NYCkidsARTS, which is also used by thousands of parents to help young people discover the joy and value of the arts. A research center. The Alliance was the first to study the arts as an industry. We continue this work, measuring the importance of culture to the economy and to education. Our reports inform the press and public officials and support the development of the entire cultural community. Click here for a list of our publications.

A leader in developing electronic applications. the NYC-ARTS.org, NYCkidsARTS.org and NYStateArts.org websites are the most comprehensive resources of their kind. All are centralized locations to access information about culture in New York and gateways to other cultural resources. The Alliances also supports culture in New York on social media and mobile platforms, a list of which is available on NYC ARTS Anywhere.

A local and national organization. The Alliance is based in New York but it has an impact nationwide, primarily through its widely replicated studies of the economic impact of the arts and the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS, which preserves on a national level the work of artists with AIDS.

Financial support for the Alliance comes from a variety of sources, primarily private foundations and corporations, and government agencies at the city, state and federal levels. Click here for a list of current supporters.
