Arts Council for Wyoming County Wyoming County
For over 25 years, the Arts Council for Wyoming County, located in Perry, has promoted the arts through gallery exhibitions and film screenings in its South Main Street facilities while also supporting the area’s cultural events. The Council organizes a Folk Arts Program that encourages the documentation and display of regional crafts and sponsors the Letchworth Arts & Crafts Festival, now in its 30th year, every Columbus Day weekend.
Arts Society of Kingston Ulster County
Made up of visual and performing artists and their supporters, this busy arts center in downtown Kingston hosts monthly exhibits in its two galleries and organizes theater performances, readings and off-site exhibitions. Special events include an Open Studio Tour each October and the Kingston Sculpture Biennial in odd-numbered years. The biennial displays numerous sculptures sited in public places around Kingston, thus giving the local community and visitors a chance to view art for free and at their leisure.
Bethel Woods Center for the Arts Sullivan County
Located on the site of the historic 1969 Woodstock Festival in Sullivan County, the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts features a copper-clad pavilion with seating for 4,800 and lawn seating for an additional 12,000 people on a slightly sloping hillside beyond. It hosts musicians of all kinds, from the New York Philharmonic, which opened the center in 2006, to Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker and other rock stars of the 1960s and later. An on-site museum uses film, photographs, text and artifacts to present the history of the Woodstock Festival and describe its ongoing influence.
Catskill Mountain Foundation Greene County
This multifaceted organization in a busy new complex in downtown Hunter runs two farms at separate locations that promote a kind of farming known as natural agriculture; hosts literary programs and performing arts events; and houses a gallery, a performing arts center, a cinema, and a bookstore. The gallery specializes in “everything from outsider art to 6th-century Japanese scrolls” and also shows many local crafts.
Chatham Film Club Columbia County
The Chatham Film Club brings the latest art, independent and foreign films to the Crandell Theatre in Chatham once a month and hosts the FilmColumbia film festival each October. A three-day event, the festival has premiered films that have gone on to receive national and international acclaim.
Children's Media Project Dutchess County
An arts and education facility that strives to teach children about media and technology, the Children's Media Project presents film and video exhibitions that address a variety of civic issues at its Digital Café space housed in the Lady Washington Firehouse in downtown Poughkeepsie. Children are also encouraged to attend workshops that teach them how to produce their own films, many of which are screened at the Hamptons International Film Festival and on the project's DROP TV youth-produced television show.
Cinema 10 St. Lawrence County
With the mission of bringing alternative cinema to St. Lawrence County, Cinema 10 offers regular screenings of independent and documentary films that might not otherwise be shown in this area of the state. Screenings are held on Monday evenings at the Roxy Theater in downtown Potsdam during the Spring and Fall.
Cinema Arts Centre Suffolk County
The Cinema Arts Centre is a movie theater in Huntington that brings independent and foreign films to Long Island on a regular schedule throughout the year. The center features an organic café that serves meals and light refreshments prior to and after each screening.
Delaware Valley Arts Alliance Sullivan County
Founded in 1976, this arts service organization in Narrowsburg is home to two galleries, the Gloria Krause Recital Hall and the 165-seat Tusten Theatre. These venues are the site of performing arts series as well as the home of the Delaware Valley opera, the Delaware Valley Chamber Orchestra and the annual Jazzfest concert series. The Delaware Arts Alliance also mounts DiGit, a digital video film festival and Riverfest, a music, art and environmental festival held on Narrowsburg’s Main Street.
Elmira Open Studio Tour Chemung County
In partnership with The ARTS of the Southern Finger Lakes, a group of artists based in and around Elmira have organized this two-day event in October to give visitors the chance to see the environments within which they create their work. Now in its fourth year, the tour includes stops at more than 13 artists' studios where visitors can see works in progress and purchase completed works.
